Match Preview – Romulus

THE FACTS

Midland Football League
Premier Division
Romulus FC v Tividale FC
Saturday 12th October 2019
Kick off at 3:00pm

The games are now coming thick and fast. It seems a month ago since the loss at Walsall Wood. A defeat that although disappointing we cannot praise the lad’s enough for their effort.

The togetherness of the squad was tested even more the following Tuesday night (8th October). when we travelled over to Rocester in the Walsall Senior Cup. At 7pm due to work and traffic we had 6 players in the dressing room but credit to the lads those who could make it they made the most of the warm up and the game kicked off on time and although maybe the game should have been over at half time. Rocester made the most of their reprieve and will feel unfortunate they did not at least get it to penalties.

Hopefully our preparation’s will be a lot better for this game as we face another of the fancied sides for this season’s championship. At present they sit a couple of places and one point behind us in the table having played a game less. They also meet us on the back of an impressive 3-2 away win at Sporting Khalsa last weekend. So another tough afternoon is in store for us.

THE HISTORY

There have been quite a few league and cup games between the two sides in recent years going back to our Northern Premier League days. Back in the 2014-2015 season our first in the NPL,  Romulus beat us 2-1 at their then home of Sutton Coldfield Town. With the game looking to be heading for a 0-0 draw James Reid put the home side ahead in the 81st minute. Rikardo Reid made it 2-0 with 5 minutes to go before Jazz Luckie got our consolation goal. Later in the season we met in the quarter final of the Walsall Senior Cup again at Coles Lane and after a fairly eventless 0-0 draw after 120 minutes, it went to penalties. At least there was a little excitement here as both teams missed one of the initial 5 pens. But in sudden death Ashley Jackson blazed over for the home side and Nigel Penney put Tividale through.

The reverse league fixture was played a week later at The Beeches on a heavy pitch in the middle of February and the conditions definitely suited the home side as they ran out 4-1 winners. Jordan Archer put Tividale ahead, before Luke Keen levelled the scores at half time. Second half goals from Archer again, Karl Edwards and Nigel Penney wrapped up the points.

The following season The Rom’s won both league games 2-0. A Joel Grandison goal and a Jason Chilton own goal assured them of the points at Coles Lane. While at The Beeches ex Tividale man Malachi Farquharson and a Luke Keen penalty saw them come away with the points.

Match Preview – Rocester

THE FACTS

Walsall Senior Cup
Round One
Rocester FC v Tividale FC
Tuesday 8th October 2019
Kick off at 7:45pm

With our national cup exploits ending at the second hurdle in both the the FA Cup and FA Vase, this game sees the second of our league, county and charity cups.

At one time we always seemed to do well in the Walsall Senior Cup. In the 4 years from 2001 to 2004 we appeared in all 4 finals, winning one and coming runners up in 3. Our one win was in 2003 against Rocester courtesy of an extra time goal. Since then though we have not got to “Finals Night” the closest being going out to Chasetown 3-0 in the 2014-2015 semi final

Our hosts had an awful start to their season. Getting hammered 5-0 in both their opening games of MFL Division One, and losing their first 4 games. They have since turned that around losing just one of the following 6 including a 4-0 win at Paget Rangers at the weekend that has lifted them to 14th in the table.

THE HISTORY

It was the 2016-2017 season when we last met. The season we last played in the MFL Premier Division. The first game was played at Rocester and despite Tividale taking the lead through Craig Stevens goals from Martin Smythe 2, Oliver Broom and a Matt Hunt own goal gave the home side a 4-1 win.

The reverse fixture at The Beeches again saw Tividale take the lead this time through Nathan Jones, but  Ashleigh Lynch brought Rocester level and Callum Riddell then put the visitors ahead before half time. Tividale salvaged a point in the last few minutes when a Jones shot took a deflection and beat Rocester keeper Richard Froggatt.

Stalemate in Selston

Midland Football League
Premier Division
Saturday 28th September 2019
Selston 1-1 Tividale

Tividale made the trip to Nottingham for our first ever game against Selston and while going into the lead with 4 minutes to go and ending up with a point is naturally disappointing. On the balance of play a share of the points was a fair result.
