Brocton 3-2 Tividale
Tividale Fall at the First Hurdle again
It was the visitors that started quickly, and they should have taken the lead inside the first minute. A quick break from Mohammad Abbas down the right played in Ryan Piggott. He in turn picked out Alfie Higgs in front of goal and he was twice foiled by superb saves from Tony Allsopp. Two minutes later, Allsopp raced off his line and brought down Piggott with the referee taking no further action against the Brocton keeper. From the free-kick, Callum Lloyd was allowed a free-header and, stooping low, he made no mistake to give Tividale the lead. Brocton responded with an effort from Christian Blanchette whose shot was blocked. In the 14th minute, a corner from Connor Haddaway was headed over by Blanchette. Brocton should have levelled a minute later. Whieldon picked out the run of the overlapping Connor Haddaway. He crossed to the far post, and Blanchette, running in, put his shot over the bar. Brocton were made to pay as Tividale doubled their lead in the 20th minute. A corner from the right was met perfectly by Lloyd who headed home at the far post. Brocton were shell shocked, but they grabbed themselves a lifeline in the 25th minute. A perfectly weighted cross by Charlie King was powered home by Blanchette at the far post. The goal settled Brocton who began to take control. Blanchette forced a fine save from Tividale keeper Ethan Hawkes. In the 32nd minute, Tom Vaughan was caught in possession, but Higgs cleared the bar with his effort. Whieldon forced another save from Hawkes before Brocton drew level in the 41st minute. Superb control from Payne saw the striker bring the ball down and hit a fierce shot in one movement. Hawkes was well beaten as the ball rattled off the cross bar. It came back out to Blanchette, who picked his spot and curled his shot into the far corner.
Half-time: Brocton 2 Tividale 2
Tividale had an excellent chance to retake the lead a minute into the second half. Higgs found space, and with only Allsopp to beat, he screwed his shot wide. Hawkes kept Tividale in it with a superb save to deny Blanchette when he was clean through. In the 53rd minute, a corner from Connor Haddaway was headed back into the box by Ben Haddaway at the far post. Blanchette got on the end of it and his header was well saved again by Hawkes. Two minute late, Whieldon played the ball into the path of Payne and his low cross was superbly cleared by Hawkes. Brocton were now very much on top. A shot from Whieldon, continuing his form from pre-season, was well saved by Hawkes. In the 68th minute, a driving run from Vaughan saw him shoot low and Hawkes pulled out an excellent stop. Blanchette continued to cause the Tividale defence problems and when he was blocked the ball came back to Whieldon and his shot was well blocked by the defence. Whieldon was not to be denied and Brocton took a deserved lead in the 73rd minute. Payne fed the ball into the path of Whieldon. Hawkes raced off his line to attempt a block, but Whieldon’s shot was superb into the far corner. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Lloyd was shown a red card following a tussle with Dan Evans – his punch on the Brocton substitute spotted by the officials. Brocton saw the clock out to take their place in the Preliminary Round where they will face either Coleshill Town or Eastwood Community at Silkmore Lane.
