1874 Northwich vs Tividale

Midland Football League

Saturday 30th December 2024
1874 Northwich 3-2 Tividale

A poor 10 minutes, the difference

Once again, the boys put on a great display against 1874 Northwich apart from a mad 10 minutes, when they conceded 3 goals. We have to learn that at this level and against good sides like 1874 Northwich we cannot afford to give them 3 goal starts.

Phil Rann made one change to the starting eleven for this game after the mid-week win against Wyrley in the JW Hunt Cup, Jordon Sangha coming in for Jamie Hunt. For the first 17 minutes the game was fairly quiet until 1874 full back Niall Osborne gets played in behind on the right, he crosses to an unmarked Eden Bailey, who controls well with his chest and hits home.

Three minutes later and 1874 doubled their lead. Tividale centre back Raheen Akhtar was caught in about three minds regarding what to do with the ball in his 6 yard box. 1874 forward Josh Oultram dispossess him and cuts the ball back for Joel Jones to side foot the ball into net.

On 27 minutes it’s 3-0 when again Oultram makes a nuisance of himself after receiving a neat pass from Joel Jones and then evading the challenge of Sam Bratt-Wyton down the right flank and as keeper Ethan Hawkes anticipates a cross, he cleverly lofted the ball into the roof of the net at Hawkes near post.

As 1874 dominated play it looked like Tividale would be heading for a long afternoon, but on the stroke of half time the visitors were given a lifeline. From a Hawkes goal kick Tom Cottam knocked the ball down to Lewis Derrick, his shot was parried away by 1874 keeper Mike Shorthouse, but he could do nothing about Ryan Piggott’s follow up strike and at half time Tividale were back in with a chance.

Half Time:- 1874 Northwich 3-1 Tividale

Tividale started the second half buoyed with the slim lifeline they were given at the end of the first and on 53 minutes Shorthouse did well coming out bravely to block an Ethan Delaney charge into the box. A minute later and Piggott looked all set to pull the trigger but was foiled by a brilliant Tom Morris tackle.

On 57 minutes 1874’s Chris McCann’s free kick was deflected off the Tividale wall and behind for a corner. On the hour Shorthouse was again there to deny Piggott as Tividale pressed forward. Tividale made it 3-2 in the 67th minute when substitute Mohammed Aon Abbas got to the left byline, pulled the ball back to the edge of the area and Bratt-Wyton ran onto it and his shot flew in via Shorthouse’s left upright.

With a minimum of 23 minutes to go the momentum was with Tividale but 1874’s game management was spot on. They tightened things up, drew Tividale into unnecessary challenges and with the help of some weak officiating were able to frustrate them to the point that they received a number of what can only described as very soft bookings in the last quarter of the game.

But in the end 1874 held out for the 3 points and Tividale can only wonder as to what could have happened but for those mad 10 minutes.

Tividale up to the Nines

Last season we went out of the JW Hunt Cup at this stage and against this same side. Who can forget last season’s encounter when we toiled for 90 minutes and with the scores level at 2-2 and heading for penalties, keeper Louis Connor’s unfortunate slip when he came out to pump the ball back up field and the ball rolled under his foot and into his net.

Well, this game was always going to be different with the attitude of this squad.

With no game for 10 days and a weekend visit to high flying 1874 Northwich. Manager Phil Rann decided to put a fairly strong squad out with just the couple of personnel changes to the side that lost 1-0 to Alvechurch last time out. In came Jamie Hunt and Lewis Derrick, replacing Callum Lloyd and Jason Wood.

Tividale started brightly and were ahead after just 13 minutes. Ryan Piggott with a sublime finish into the far corner beating Wyrley keeper Mark Wiggins all end’s up. Delaney made it 2-0 on 25 minutes with the clinical finish, slotting under Wiggins.

Wyrley had a half chance on the hour but it was 3-0 after 33 minutes. A break from the home side and Piggott is there again, one on one with Wiggins and he puts it past the keeper. Tom Cottam made it 4-0 in the 42nd minute when he was given way too much room in the centre of the goal and he turned on the penalty spot and put the ball past Wiggins.

Half Time:- Tividale 4-0 Wyrley

The half was only 5 minutes old when Delaney is found at the back post for an easy tap in to make it 5-0. The game became a little disjointed as a raft of substitutions were mad and it was not until the 77th minute before Tividale found the net again. A Wyrley defensive mix up left substitute Aon Mohammed Abbas in the clear and he finishes with conviction to make it 6-0.

Two minutes later and it was 7-0. Good work again from Abbas and his low shot, come cross across the 6 yard box, took a deflection off a defender and past the hapless Wiggins.

Another substitute and debutant Nehemia Zazi showed his goal scoring instinct with a cool finish under Wiggins on 81 minutes and then three minutes later another sub Ezekiel Agyemang got in on the act  to make it 9-0.

Tividale 0-1 Atherstone Town

The Adders edge it

Once again Tividale found a way to come up just short whatever the opposition. A display like last week and this would have been a cricket score. Instead they put in 100 times more effort but in the end a bit of quality was the difference between the two sides.

It was a bitter sweet selection problem for Manager Phil Rann. On one hand Ethan Delaney was back in the squad after his time off, but on the other hand Jordon Sangha was unavailable for this game. The other couple of changes saw new signing Tom Cottam and Eddie Rann come in for Luke Postle and Aon Mohammed Abbas.

Tividale were under the cosh from the off as Atherstone piled on the pressure and a mixture of poor finishing and excellent defending kept the first period goalless. The best chances came first in the 5th minute when indecisiveness in the home back line allowed the prolific Ryan Harkin to take the ball down but he dragged his shot wide. On 7 minutes Ethan Hawkes had to turn a Lewis Collins shot around the post and a minute later Harkin failed to hit the target with another effort.

tividale’s one decent chance of the first period came in the 12th minute, when Delaney was put through, beat his marker, took it wide of Adders keeper Finn Osborn but the angle became too acute and he shot wide.

There then followed a 30 minute period where Atherstone could not find the rhythm of the first 15 minutes while Tividale were a lot more comfortable defensive wise but never threatened the visitors goal. Until the 40th minute when a beautifully cushioned nod down teed up Collins nicely but the forward blazed his shot high and wide

Half Time:- Tividale 0-0 Atherstone Town

The Adders were still squandering chances in the second period. Again Harkin the culprit as he shot wide after 51 minutes, but three minutes later he was given one chance too many and he punished Tividale. Harkin chased down a through ball from Nicol that Tividale defender Tom Rann failed to clear and he slotted home.

It should have been 2-0 on 57 minutes but again Hawkes denied Harkin, pulling off another brilliant save. Tividal’s only attempt on goal in the half fell to Sam Bratt-Wyton, but keeper Osborn watched it sail high, wide and not very hansome.

Srervice was immediately restored with The Adders piling on the pressure and on 68 minutes Hawkes again saved well from Harkin. There then followed a raft of substitutes that did nothing for what was not a great game anyway and in the end  that is how the game finished with The Addrers unavble to add to their score and Tividale never really threatening.

Not Acceptable

On a weekend of honouring those that fell in the two world war’s and conflict’s since. It was an impeccable minutes silence from both set of players, staff and supporters

So far this season it has been fair to say that win. lose or draw, the lad’s cannot be faulted for their battling qualities and never say die attitude. When that doesn’t appear to be the case then they look a very poor side and that was the case in a very poor second half performance that saw us crash out of this season’s FA Vase.

Four changes were made to the starting eleven that kicked off in the midweek defeat at AFC Wulfrunians. In came Sam Bratt-Wyton, Harry Higginson, Luke Postle and Jordon Sangha in place of Jevani Robinson, Jamie Hunt, Ezekiel Agyemang and Lewis Derrick

The crossbar saved Ethan Hawkes blushes after just 6 minutes as a lob with the keeper in no man’s land just skims over the bar. Then Higginson had to put in a block to deny Sutton getting a shot off. Sutton continued to make the most of the possession and chances for the opening 25 minutes.

It was Tividale who finished the half the stronger when on 25 minutes Sutton keeper Gregg Lewis did well to turn a Ryan Piggott shot around the post for a corner and then an Abbas cross just fizzed past Lewis’s far post as the home side settle into their work.

Half Time: Tividale 0-0 Sutton United

No one could have guessed what was going to happen in the second period as it was literally one way traffic from the kick off. First of all, Sutton’s captain Tom Masse’s cross evaded everyone in the Tividale box and skipped out for a goal kick. But on 50 minutes Sutton where ahead  Oli Jeeves is allowed to run at the heart of the Tividale defence he plays a one two with Scott Hardy and then beats Hawkes with his shot. Although the keeper does get something on it, he cannot stop the ball going in.

You would have thought that the goal would have stirred the home side into action but instead it was all Sutton and on 65 minutes Sutton double their lead courtesy of a Joe Gildea strike,  stealing in unmarked to get on the end of an Abdul Touaiti free kick with the Tividale defenders appealing in vain for offside!

Three minutes later and it could have been 3-0 with Hayden Froggatt through one on one with Hawkes but the keeper denied him with a great block. On 79 minutes Gildea was inches close to his second and Sutton’s 3rd when he was just unable to get his shot on target.

With 5 minutes to go one of the assistants pulled up injured and had to be replaced holding up the game for about 5 minutes. The hold up did not put Sutton off their stride and Froggatt shot over after some great individual work.

Tividale did have a couple of chances of a consolation in the dying minutes, first  a strike from a corner rattled the Sutton crossbar and a Mario Mendez effort was comfortably held by Lewis.

In the end Tividale slipped meekly out of the competition and all the best to Sutton United in the next round, who deserved purely on the fact that they wanted it more.
