Match Preview – Walsall Wood

Midland Football League
Premier Division
Walsall Wood FC v Tividale FC
Saturday 5th October 2019
Kick off at 3:00pm

This game will be one of our sternest tests in this campaign, against a side who only failed to win this league last season by goal difference after just failing to overhaul eventual winners Ilkeston Town despite finishing the season with a 12 match unbeaten run.

This season The Wood have started how they left off last season and going into this game they are again only not top due to their inferior goal difference.

We on the other hand will go into this game knowing full well the size of the task but full of confidence due to our last few results and performances which also show’s that we can compete in this league.

We have met a number of times over the last few seasons. But possibly our best result was the last time we met. It was an FA Cup Preliminary Round played at Walsall Wood in 2017. A Dan Smith back post volley accompanied with  some tremendous defensive work and quite a few missed Walsall Wood chances all helped us to a brilliant win.

In the 2016-2017 season, one that ended in relegation for both teams, we met three times. It was honours even in the league, with both teams winning their respective away fixtures. It was our first match of the season at a sunny Beeches when we first met and goals from Ashley Jackson (via a massive Tom Hurdman deflection) and Harry Harris gave the visitors a 2-0 win and the points.

The reverse fixture at Oak Park swung Tividale’s way with the help of two completely different goals in 8 first half minutes. The first had Dan Smith bundling the ball over the line from a Lewis McPike cross. The second, Darragh Bustin won a ball he had no right to win in his own half and swept an unbelievable first time 50 yard cross field ball to McPike on the right wing. McPike then hit a superb first time cross that Chris Bladen met with an unstoppable header that hit the back of the net before Wood keeper Lewis Gwilliam had chance to even move. Bladen made it 3-0, thirteen minutes into the second half before a Drew Aiton cross evaded everyone in the Tividale area and nestled in the net.

In between the two league games, we also met at The Beeches in the league cup and we were comprehensively beaten. Romero Hutton gave The Wood a half time lead and then second half goals from Joey Butlin and Leon Taylor gave them a 3-0 win.
