Tividale 3-2 Cranfield United

Back in the Hat

Due to last season’s exploits, Tividale were exempt from the previous round and began their FA Vase exploits with a tricky home tie against Cranfield United a team from Bedfordshire. In a very good game Tividale went through to a second round tie against MFL Division One side Sutton United, but they made it very difficult for themselves.

There was four changes to the side that battled back from  3 nil down to come up just short against Atherstone Town last week. In came Tom and Eddie Rann, Callum Lloyd, and Ryan Piggott, replacing Brandon Mossini,  Mohammed Sahil Sajad, Aon Mohammed Abbas, and Ezekiel Agyemang.

Cranfield showed their intentions in the 2nd minute as Cranfield forward James Elkington-Sloan fired wide of Ethan Hawkes post. But Tividale went ahead in the 4th minute with Alfie Higgs heading home a Jordon Sangha corner. Three minutes later and Ethan Delaney should have made it 2-0 when he rounded his marker, beat Cranfield keeper Karl Daley with his shot but was denied by a Cranfield defender on the line.

In an action packed opening an on target Flynn Baker-Bond free kick was deflected wide by Tom Rann. Then a Sangha free kick was touched onto the crossbar by Daley. Tividale spurned another great chance on 18 minutes when a Sangha free kick was headed wide by Harry Higginson.

Cranfield ended the half much the stronger and Kai Akinjiola had a great chance to level in the 33rd minute when Hawkes had to be sharp off the line and claim the ball with him bearing down on goal. then Joe Warboys grazed the outside of Hawkes post with a 20 yard effort. Baker-Bond then fired wide and on the stroke of half time Warboys saw his effort well saved by Hawkes to keep Tividale’s one goal lead at the break.

Half Time: Tividale 1-0 Cranfield United

From a Cranfield corner on 50 minutes they almost levelled but Tom Rann cleared off the line. But on 60 minutes there was no denying the visitors when a through ball from Baker-Bond found to Elkington-Sloan, who’s first shot was blocked by Hawkes, but Elkington-Sloan was first to the rebound and slotted home. Akinjiola had a golden chance to put Cranfield ahead when one on one with Hawkes but somehow, he blazed his shot high and wide.

Ater being on the back foot for the middle third of the game, Tividale slowly began to get hold of the game and a first time volley from substitute Taylor Homer in the 75th minute fizzed wide. This was just a range finder because on 87 minutes Tividale were awarded a free kick and Homer curled it into the top corner of the net. As the game moved into injury time Homer took the ball and looked to be running it into the corner, with defenders converging on him, he switched the ball into fellow sub Abbas leaving him one on one with Daley and he lashed the ball past him and into the back of the net.

With the game well into injury time Cranfield got another goal. Not really sure what happened but somehow Hawkes was left in no man’s land a through ball over the top to Leo Cimmino who dinks the keeper. In what was the last kick of the game
