Hartley Produces Boxing Day Punch
The pitch for this Christmas Local Derby was as described “not the best”. In fact, it was a surprise that it was on at all. But Mr Jack Stenson the match referee deemed it good enough, but he did warn that with the consistent rain it may not run the whole 90 minutes.
With Jason Wood testing positive on a flow test on the morning of the game Elliott Hartley came straight back into the staring eleven after he himself had missed the Stone Old Alleynians game due to Covid. That was to be the only change to the starting eleven from 9 days ago. There was a couple of changes to the bench though as we welcomed back Joe Burroughs after his isolation spell and also Dan Smith after missing the last 12 weeks with a broken ankle.
Lye had the first decent chance after just 4 minutes when a free kick from former Tividale player Joe Hawkins from inside his own half and into the Tividale box and it was headed against the bar by another former Tividale player Adam Garmson. On 7 minutes a Lye corner from Ben Billingham was headed over by Hawkins from close range when it looked easier for him to score. Lye then opened up the visitor’s defence with a neat passing move on 13 minutes. Matt Johnson found Morgan Owen who in turn played the ball into Oliver West, but the latter skied his shot and into the stand. Lye spurned another great chance when the conditions underfoot caused Tom Hurdman to slip and let in Lye centre forward Dylan Hart, but his shot was hit straight at Tividale keeper Peter Hawk.
Tividale’s first real chance of the game came in the 26th minute. Hartley cannot get his shot off but tees up Luke Carter but his shot drifts wide of Lye keeper Ben Newey’s upright. Then a couple of minutes later Brad Welding tries one from an outrageous 35 plus yards out that flashes past Newey and also his far post. On 34 minutes Carter put’s Hartley through but his shot is smothered by Newey.
After a passage of play in the 40th minute, it is amazing that Lye are not in front. From a Tividale free kick Newey collects and sends the ball forwards and Bellingham wins the ball. His shot is parried away by Hawk but the ball lands at the feet of Hart, he fires towards the opposite corner and where Hawk had dived from first time, but somehow Hawk is back on his feet and dives full length to deny him also. An amazing double save.
With 43 minutes gone Darragh Bustin breaks down the right beats his marker, cuts in but he fires past Newey and the wrong side of his far post. A great first half with chances for both sides on a very sticky pitch but both trying to make a game of it.
Half Time: Lye Town 0-0 Tividale
3 minutes into the second period and again a chance for both sides. First Garmson clips an effort high and wide after clever work from West. Then at the other end from a Bustin long throw that causes problems in the Lye box, it falls to Ethan Muckley who hooks over from about 8 yards out. On 50 minutes and Muckley is through again, this time Welding and Hartley link up to play him in but from an acute angle he could only find the side netting. 55 minutes and Lye play a long ball forward, it’s headed on to Adam Garmson but Hawk is equal to his shot.
On 61 minutes and Lye have a free kick on the halfway line. Billingham takes it. He puts into the Tividale area but it is not cleared and Adam Meacham’s shot comes back off the Tividale cross bar. Four minutes later and Tividale break the deadlock. Another Bustin long throw again causes Lye’s defence all sorts of problems. Newey cannot clear it and Hartley is at the back post to slam the ball home. Muckley could have doubled the lead on 77 minutes but he seemed unsure if he had beaten the offside trap and, in the end, Newey had no problem with his shot.
As the game moved deep into stoppage time with Lye throwing everything forward. Tividale break forward down the right, The ball is played in low to Bustin. He is brought down by Hawkins who is given maybe a little harsh a straight red. As the foul was on the halfway line and there was a possibility that Lye would got have men back.
In the end Tividale saw out the game as Lye could not find the equaliser. A decent game on a difficult pitch, Credit to both sides
